Chapter 7 Discussion Questions: Comparative Wildlife Politics
  1. Compare wildlife politics in the U.S. and Canada. What are the major similarities? What are the major differences? What factors explain these differences?
  2. What does the “North American model of wildlife conservation” refer to? Why does Geist believe this model is superior? Do you agree or disagree with his analysis? Explain.
  3. What are the major differences between in attitudes towards wildlife conservation between Japan and the U.S.? What factors explain these differences?
  4. Explain how the existence of a weak central government affects wildlife conservation in developing countries such as those in Africa or Latin America.
  5. Give examples of how cultural values and attitudes influences wildlife conservation.  Discuss whether these cultural values and attitudes are subject to change.
  6. What do the terms “nature exporting” and “nature importing” refer to? Explain.
  7. Read the material in the book concerning the poaching of elephants, rhinos, and other wildlife and also other materials that are available to you such as the following Internet sources:
(A) Levin, Dan. From elephants’ mouths, an illicit trail to China. New York Times, http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/02/world/asia/an-illicit-trail-of-african-ivory-to-china.html

(B) Vira, Varun, Ewing, Thomas. Ivory’s Curse: The militarization & professionalization of
poaching in Africa/ Available from: http://media.wix.com/ugd/e16b55_7ccc46650a664e47b09709c97bc94933.pdf

Then discuss the underlying causes of threats to wildlife such as elephants and rhinos. What approach would you recommend to deal with the threats to these species?

8, There is disagreement over whether trophy hunting should be allowed for species such as lions in Africa.  Read the material in the text as well as other sources available such as the following Internet publications:

(A) Cousins, Jenny A., Sadler, Jon P., Evans, James. The challenge of regulating private wildlife ranches for conservation in South Africa. Ecol Soc [Internet]. 2010 Available from: www.ecologyandsociety.org/vol15/iss2/art28/

(B) Songorwa, Alexander N. Saving lions by killing them. New York Times. Available from: www.nytimes.com/2013/03/18/opinion/savinglions-by-killing-them.html?ref=opinion&pagewanted=print

Then discuss whether you agree whether trophy hunting has overall a positive or negative effect on the preservation of the species being hunted.

9. Discuss the theory behind Community-Based Natural Resources Management—how is it supposed to assist wildlife conservation? Then analyze how it has been implemented by various African nations. How successful has CBNRM been in accomplishing its goals? What are the major obstacles to its success?  What factors contribute to making it successful?

10. Discuss the role of foreign nations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in wildlife conservation in developing countries. How important has their role been? What have been their successes? What problems and limitations exist concerning their role?

11. There is controversy over human populations that live in or near protected areas in developing countries. After reading the material in the text and other information available such as the Internet publications listed below, identify the major points in dispute and your assessment of the best way to deal with this controversy.

12. The Payments for Environmental Services (PES) approach has become one of the major vehicles proposed to support wildlife conservation in developing countries. After reading the text and other materials such as the Internet publication below, describe the PES approach. How is it supposed to work? How effective has it been in practice? What factors can make it fail?
