Does Killing Bears Increase Tolerance and reduce conflict with them? Harvesting of black bears may help improve tolerance for bears. Research by J.D. Raithel et al. in J of Applied Ecology suggests that harvests of black bears tends to affect “nuisance bears” (e.g., those that destroy property and visit garbarge) somewhat (7%) more than other bears. Thus the authors suggest that the result of the harvests may be fewer human-bear conflicts and increased tolerance for the bears in New Jersey (and hence an increase in the “carrying capacity” of the habitat for this species.
